On arriving in Gata we are surprised by its gently rolling landscape that allows us to take in a glimpse a wide succession of cultivated terraces.  On them they grow vines, olives and almonds, alternating with fertile allotments of vegetables and fruit trees, near which we will nearly always find a farmhouse.

Gata has always been linked to art and handicrafts.  Walking along the Avenida de la Marins Alta and adjacent streets, the visitor will find a wide and select offer of furniture and craft work in palm, wicker and cane.  The survival of the traditional manufacture of wicker and cane baskets is now the national and international distinctive feature of Gata de Gorgos and the basis of its productive economy.

We should visit the Archaeological Museum or the guitar factory to learn about the artisan production process of this instrument.  We can also walk along the left bank of the Gorgos river between the gardens of the Font del Riu, visit the San Miquel Arcangel church or climb to the Santisimo Cristo hermitage.

Another interesting aspect of the municipal district and a must for a visit are the ancient remains of Moslem settlements of the Font de la Mata or la Murta, of la Rana or the Font d´Aixa and their natural surroundings along which we will be able to make many excursions.

This town has a celebrations diary full of fiestas and traditions.  We will highlight several: the fiestas of San Antonio Abad (January 17), the “hogueras” of San Juan (June 24) and the main fiestas in honour of the Santisimo Cristo del Calvario, celebrated from July 29 to August 6.
