Ontinyent, a city waiting to be conquered

There is an area inland in the community of Valencia where water is born, where the stones know stories, where it is still possible to to for a walk in the sunset and get away from it all. Ontinyente exists in a valley between mountains, at the junction between the roads of the plateau and the Mediterranean shelf.

Moors and Christians fought for centuries to get control of this place. The record of these episodes continues today and it´s represented in one of the most spectacular fiestas that you can attend in the last days of August (photo).

The majesty of this arid land offers the visitor a panorama of rugged landscape interspersed by the colours of almond and fruit trees. Ontinyent works, sleeps and develops, almost unnoticed, in the Clariano basin, which divides the valley into two parts. Now, it´s the time to enjoy a peaceful vistit, to be overcome by its charm and finish conquering a city, which never disappoints its visitors.

Geographical Position of Ontinyent

Ontinyent City is 382 metres above sea level, in the Southwest of a valley surrounded by montains (Agullent-Benicadell Sierras in the south and Grossa Sierra in the north). It´s the capital of the district of "La Vall d'Albaida".

The original town was extended on the right side of the river but nowadays the city occupies both banks, due to its large growth in the last 50 years.
