LIFESAVING AND BEACH SAFETY MONITORING BEGINS FOR SUMMER

As the temperatures really start to hot up and sun-seekers flock to the coast, the Cruz Roja de Jávea has begun a monitoring campaign of some of the municipality's more popular beaches, a watch that will last until the popular season ends on September 15th. From 11 in the morning until 7 in the evening, the beaches of the Arenal, La Grava and Granadella will have lifeguards on duty on a daily basis; these times will be extended from 10am until 8pm for the Arenal, the beach which boasts the most visitors during the high season between July 1st and August 31st which will also have a bathroom point accessible to those who have mobility problems. The beaches of Montañar-Benissero and Portitxol will initially have lifeguard services during the weekends only until July when the cover will provided on a daily basis from 11am until 7pm. Last season there were a total of 52 rescues and no fatalities during the times that the beaches were monitored.

The service will provide a total of 40 personnel spread across their responsibilities who will be trained in first aid as well as ambulance drivers and a lifeguard boat team. Two ambulances have been assigned, one to the Arenal and the other to Granadella as well as a boat at both beaches and a jetski based as Portitxol. There will also be kayak cover at the beach of Benissero and a rescue vehicle that will provide logistical support, coordination and backup resources if and when necessary.

The Department of Beaches, headed by councillor Doris Courcelles, has joined with the board from the local branch of the Cruz Roja in reminding beach users to respect the recommendations of the lifeguards, help keep the beaches as clean as possible by removing rubbish and take into account the colour of warning flags which will be flying above the patrolled beaches indicating the following conditions:

GREEN
Bathing is permitted since the state of the sea is suitable for swimming, there is no waste or pollution levels that are liable to be harmful and there are no jellyfish or small sharks that may pose a risk to bathers.

YELLOW
Caution should be exercised when swimming. The sea conditions are such that they may cause problems for some bathers either through large waves or strong currents. There may also be a weather condition in the area (such as a storm) which may affect conditions. A yellow flag might also indicate pollution or jellyfish and other dangerous animals in the water.

RED
Bathing is prohibited. The condition of the sea is such that it poses a direct risk to bathers either through large waves, very strong currents or contamination. The flag might also indicate weather conditions that would be harmful to bathers as well as dangerous marine animals in the water.

In addition, there will be a team of volunteers from the Cruz Roja who will supporting the professional lifeguards by providing advice on the prevention of accidents in the water, tips on safety in the sunshine and promoting a respect for the environment, amongst other activities.
